Have you seen this movie? Alot must have done. But for those who didn't yet, please do! as soon as you can!
If I am going to analyize this movie, it'll take days, and it wouldn't be enough! So, I'm just going to talk as briefly as I can..
"Chocolat" is a 2000 film, based on the novel "Chocolat" by Joanne Harries, and it goes on in the French village of "Lansquenet sous Tannes", where the young lady ,Vianne Rocher "Juliette Binoche" -the one in the photo-, moves with her 6-year old daughter Anouk "Victorie Thivisol", and opens "La Chocolaterie Maya", a small chocolaterie in the village. Her marvellous chocolate quickly starts affecting all the people of the village, and brings them to her small store..
As the movie goes on in the winter of 1959, in a conservative and religious village, with a very pious mayor "Alfred Molina", the arrival of the chocolate lady and her daughter, represents the arrival of the enemy!
The "Chocolat" represents alot of things, mainly the freedom of the village's people, the poor ones who got lost in life, and forgot themselves.. It represents the human integrity: love, desire, open mind and free soal, every thing that was a taboo in the old French village, before the arrival of "Chocolat"!..
Certain scents I enjoyed much, like this one when Anouk, the little daughter, was insulted by some people in the village who called her mother bad names. She came crying to her mom, asking :"Why don't we go to the church?", the mom replied :"We can if you want!", Then Anouk cried loudly, "Why don't you put on black shoes like all the mothers?!"..This sentence alone carried so many meanings to me..
It's the beauty of the human mind and free soal, that we keep discovering by swimming in the "Chocolat" along the movie!.. This beauty which was a goal for Vianne Rocher, to fight for, to stay for in this small village, with a certian belief of its existance inside every small mind of those poor people who are scared of this beauty!. And it is marvellous to follow the small changes she made by getting involved in thier lives, that grew up with observable results on each character's life. And the major change -in my point of view-is in a scent where the mayor decides to destroy Vianne's store, as a last mesirable try, to send her out of thier lives. Holding a knife in his hand, and walking into her store front which was filled with beautiful chocolate collections and statues made by a real artist, he starts destroying them crazily, when a drop of chocolate suddenly flies on his lip, and he tastes it for the first time!. He puts down the knife, and starts tasting all the types of the chocolate in the front, until he falls asleep!, and wakes up the next morning, in the store front, another person!. It was a special scent made very well, where we could feel the power of "Chocolat", and all that it represents, going inside him for the first time, and changing him forever!..
That's the power of a free open mind, with a persisting amazing unique taste of freedom, a taste that people of the village could never forget, and could never give up, and the same people eventually made Vianne stay, when she once lost hope and decided to walk away!
It's a beautiful movie based on an amazing story, of the endless power and beauty of a human's open mind and flying soal.. If you didn't watch it yet, please do!
